Individual Note: In the Barons war 1264-67 he defeated the Barons at Evesham (1265) as King he is noted for encouraging Parliamentary institutions at the expense of feudalism and for subduing Wales on which he imposed the English system of administration. He later tried to assert his authority over Scotland and died while on his way to fight Robert Bruce.
Reign: 1272-1307; Of the Plantagenets, House of Anjou. In 1270 Edward left England to join the Seventh Crusade. The first years of Edward's reign were a period of the consolidation of his power. He suppressed corruption in the administration of justice, restricted the jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical courts to church affairs, and eliminated the papacy's overlordship over England. In 1290 Edward expelled all Jews from England. In 1296, after invading and conquering Scotland, he declared himself king of that realm. The conquest of Scotland became the ruling passion of his life. He was, however, compelled by the nobles, clergy and commons to desist in his attempts to raise by arbitrary taxes the funds he needed for campaigns. In 1307 Edward set out for the third time (at age 68) to subdue the Scots, but he died en route near Carlisle on 7 Jul 1307.

Individual Note: Many genealogical writers have stated that Sir John Pettus was the father of the emigrant to Virginia. The first Sir John4 was buried in 1613. His sons were Augustine5 and Thomas.5 Sir Augustine,5 born 1582, had two sons, Sir Thomas,6 first baronet of Rackheath, who had Sir Thomas,7 second baronet, who died 1671 in England, and Sir John,7 third baronet. The other son of Sir Augustine was Sir John,6 born in 1613, whose only son mentioned was Richard7 who died in 1662 after going to France.
Thomas Pettus,4 Sir John4's younger brother, who was baptized in 1542 and died in 1620, had 17 children, his second child being William,5 baptized in 1583 and died in 1648, and he is stated by Prof. Charles J. Colcock, of Charleston, S. C., in his compilation of the lineage of the Pettus Family, in the Virginia Historical Society library, Richmond, Va., to have been the father of Thomas Pettus,6 the emigrant to Virginia. We believe Professor Colcock is correct and in collecting our data we have drawn largely from this source.
Thomas Pettus,6 the emigrant, received a patent for land in James City County, Va., in 1643, and in 1645 had a grant of 886 acres in James City County in right of his wife Elizabeth, the widow of Richard Durant. He came to Virginia in 1638 and died in 1660. He was the progenitor of the Pettus family in Virginia. His son:
